when creating a menu item for a single item of a component, there is a select-list where you select which item should be displayed. But the select-list only displays id's and not titles. So you always have to go first to the component, to check the id of the item you wish to display, and then go to create a menu item.
I would suggest that the list displays the same column that is used for the link in the item-listing of the component in /administrator: The first text-field in the table listing. Alternatively a choice to check which column in the table should be used as title-column.
